Books, Illustrators and Secret Collaborators

Our journey began with The Book of Mistakes. Where one mistake could lead to something wonderful...

Picture
Each student got a piece of paper with a squiggly line in a different color per 3rd grade class. They turned that mistake into a unique drawing...

The next day we explored this wordless book, Draw the Line. The bold colors and emotional illustrations tell us more about the story than words could.

Each class was switched with another. Then they had the opportunity to add color and more drawing to the previous class's original "mistake" work.

The final day we read The Art of Miss Chew. A beautiful story of a seemingly dyslexic student that figures out she sees the art in words instead of the words themselves with the help of teachers around her.

We celebrated with a gallery walk. The pictures revealed each students "collaborator" in their art piece from the other class.

Third graders are participating in the Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Awards. We have been reading one choice aloud in library. Students have been taking sketch notes to expand their thinking and predicting skills. Sketch notes are a form of "visual note taking." You can youtube it and see plenty of tutorials. We have been learning that if you can write letters, YOU CAN DRAW! It's all just curved and straight lines.

Check out some of the sketch notes from Mr. Gifford's class.

Our third grade classes began exploring concrete poetry in library.

We have been creating our own on paper and also making concrete poems with the application: Theme Poetry, through ReadWriteThink.
**These digital poems coming soon!

The students are pretty surprised by the various forms poetry can take. Here are some of their responses to it:
