WESLANDIA!
1. We read the picture book
2. We discussed problems Wes could have during the story
3. We drew out solutions to the problems - blue prints (the sky is the limit!)
4. We built those solutions (using recyclables and items from Schoolhouse Supply)
5. We shared our SOLUTION creations

*The captions break down the learning and building process.

Osmo Masterpiece has been a big hit at lunch library recess. Osmo uses a base and reflective mirror on the iPad camera to reflect an image back at you. When finished, each piece is set to time-lapse... see the videos below!

Research, Modification, Development and Prototype Building

Over the course of 8 weeks the 4th and 5th graders were engaged in a unit that involved:

  • researching an invention that already exists with multiple databases
  • choosing to modify that invention into something that helps humans, animals or the planet
  •  developing a detailed sketch (blueprint) of the invention or modification that included detailed parts, drawing parts that move, explaining what each part does and what materials it is made of
  • answering questions about where this product would be sold and for what price, would your friends purchase it?
  • building a model of the invention using our library recyclables MAKERSPACE
  • having a limit on how many supplies they could use each day (replicating funding and resource scarcity)
  • experiencing a time limit of three 20 minute sessions to complete
  • developing questions to ask other teams about their inventions based on all the previous steps

THEN...

Having the opportunity to share their inventions with their classmates in a conference style gallery walk!

The Buckman Library was gifted this awesome "tinker camp" cart from another library at the end of last year.

We have been taking advantage of all the "Recyclables" and "Trash" that people throw out and turning it  into our own inventions. Getting inspired by THESE awesome books, some classes have been creating inventions!

Our MakerSpace has some concepts we follow:

  • Concepts
    • Invent - What is an inventor? What does it mean to invent something?
    • Construct - What does construct mean?
    • Deconstruction - If construct means ……, what does deconstruct mean?
    • Modify - What does it mean to modify something?
    • Failure - Do you think inventors invented exactly what they wanted the first time around? We never make things perfect the first time!
