Research, Modification, Development and Prototype Building

Over the course of 8 weeks the 4th and 5th graders were engaged in a unit that involved:

researching an invention that already exists with multiple databases
choosing to modify that invention into something that helps humans, animals or the planet
developing a detailed sketch (blueprint) of the invention or modification that included detailed parts, drawing parts that move, explaining what each part does and what materials it is made of
answering questions about where this product would be sold and for what price, would your friends purchase it?
building a model of the invention using our library recyclables MAKERSPACE
having a limit on how many supplies they could use each day (replicating funding and resource scarcity)
experiencing a time limit of three 20 minute sessions to complete
developing questions to ask other teams about their inventions based on all the previous steps
